Photography in the Dark
The Photo Forum training from two years prior had emphasized composition. My mentor John piqued my interest in the technical aspects. I read everything I could get my hands on, and tried to apply what I’d learned from John.

“Power Flick”
John gave me my first intro to “painting with light”. He’d made a few images himself and referred me to some recent articles in photography magazines.
This image was largely unplanned. I placed a camera on a tripod, opened the shutter, then Vince and I used road flares, black powder, and strobes to form the image. Of the three exposures we made that night, this was the best one.
This location was also where Vince and I “car camped” one Thanksgiving. But that’s another story…

Wet Night at College
Being on the newspaper and yearbook staff, I carried a camera most of the time. This gloomy image was one of my favorites, as it seemed to convey the “wetness”.
