Darkroom 1975

Darkroom 1975

Where Light Met Chemistry

In 1975, John and I regularly occupied the darkroom. He did most of the work while I watched and learned. By ’76, John had graduated, leaving Billy, Gary and me to pick up the reins. I was spending three hours a day working in the darkroom with a cassette player filling in background music.

Preparing Chemicals

We operated on a shoestring budget and used print developing solutions until they were exhausted. It was time to mix up a fresh batch.

Supper while Working Late

To meet a yearbook deadline, Billy, Gary, and I stayed into the evening. Billy picked up supper from the country store down the road. These guys would later be my college roommates, at different times, at different schools. We were tight.

The chemistry utility room in the photo also served as the yearbook staff workroom. The darkroom was adjacent, out of frame to the left.

Negative Inspection

The yearbook staff had marked up contact sheets showing which frames they wanted. I was matching up the negatives to be printed.
