Olin Mills Photography Training

During the summer of 1974, my school paid to send John and me to five days of Olin Mills photography training in preparation for working on the yearbook. Each morning, we’d have a classroom session covering a few techniques, such as “the rule of thirds”, using depth of field, and maximizing film dynamic range.

Then they’d give each of us a roll of film to shoot in the afternoon. Overnight, the instructors would develop all the film and we’d have one-on-one critiques the next morning to see how well we’d applied the techniques.

An eclectic group, even more interesting than the high-quality instruction we were receiving.

Roll 4 of 5 Contact Sheet

This was the critique of my fourth roll. An instructor rated the better frames, and marked how they should be cropped for better composition.

My Favorite Frame, from Roll 3

This lady on staff was tickled to have a new Bob Dylan album, and didn’t mind having a photo made to commemorate the occasion. I was pleased to get the depth of field and the exposure correct at the same time.
