An Italian Harley-Davidson
This was my first bike, an Aermacchi Harley-Davidson Sprint SS 350. It had an unusual engine that was similar to half of a Ducati. 6 Volt electrics meant that night riding was best done by a full moon.
It had led a hard life and the previous owner had “chopped” it, which made low speed parking lot maneuvering a challenge. But, out on the road, it was a blast to ride!

Chopped
With the “raked” frame, 6″ overstock forks, and pullback bars, it sat level and had a nice profile. Even the cat approved.

Easy Riders
B. and I covered a lot of back road miles and ventured into the mountains several times. After a crash in late ’75, I had the frame “unraked” and resorted to the stock fork tubes and boots.

Somewhat Restored
I eventually painted it metal flake green, tweaked and tuned, and bought a working speedometer. ‘Discovered that I’d been riding everywhere at 70mph.
I was so excited when I got it. Although it was much too cold, I rode it to school. ‘Had to stop halfway and warm my hands on the mufflers.
‘Went through the engine a few times and became quite adept at setting valve clearances that balanced the “clack clack clack” with performance. I still have the service manual. Flipping through it brings back memories.
